What To Do After A Car Accident

A car accident can happen at any time. It is important to know what steps to take to protect your rights if you are injured in a wreck.

1. Report The Accident To Authorities

Call 911 to report injuries and your location. A Bastrop County mile marker or Smithville cross street can help first responders to find you more quickly.

Texas law required the operator of a motor vehicle involved in a crash to immediately:

  • Stop at the scene
  • Find out if anyone involved in the accident needs emergency medical care
  • Notify the local police department or sheriff's office

Stay at the scene until law enforcement and EMTs arrive to provide information and offer any aid to injured individuals. Provide complete and accurate information to officers and ask how you can request a copy of the report.

2. Get Medical Treatment

If a serious injury prevents movement or could lead to permanent impairment, seek immediate treatment.

In many cases, you may not immediately feel the full effects of an injury. Make a doctor's appointment to get care as soon as you recognize that something is not right (for example you cannot sleep, feel confused, have blurry vision or are having trouble making it through the workday). Document all injuries and doctor's visits.

3. Seek Information And Notify Your Insurance Company

This step can be impossible when there is a serious injury. If you are able, take pictures of the scene and damage to your vehicle. Write any notes about what you remember right before the crash and how it seemed happened.

Try to collect information from the other driver(s) involved, such as contact information, vehicle make and model, license plate number and insurance policy number. If another driver refuses, law enforcement officers can often facilitate the exchange of information.

Within the first couple days, you also need to contact your insurance company to notify them that an accident occurred.

4. Talk With A Personal Injury Attorney

Insurance coverage is complicated. Determining what caused the crash often requires an investigation to uncover negligent driving behavior or a faulty part.

Each accident is different. Individualized legal advice from a lawyer who handles personal injury claims can spot potential issues. Hiring an attorney is the only way to ensure you receive maximum compensation to pay medical bills, lost wages and pain and suffering.
